Canon City is the Gateway to the
Arkansas River
Valley and county seat of
Fremont
County. The Arkansas River
extends the entire 60-mile length of the Fremont County
and flows through the City of Canon City. For
tourists who are in a hurry, Fremont County
Airport is only minutes away from Canon
City. Enjoy traveling
through the breathtaking Royal
Gorge
canyon area via the historic Royal Gorge Route
Railroad. The Dinosaur Depot
Museum is located in the
Garden Park Fossil Area, which is less than one mile
away. Canon City
is another town with a lot of Victorian/Territorial
architecture. The area is also home to most of
Colorado's prisons and the primary BLM
office for southern
Colorado.
The Red Rocks Climbing Area on Shelf Road is 12 miles north of Canon
City
at the southern end of a white-knuckle drive. This
one isn't recommended for RV's, campers or the
chicken-hearted as the road is perched high on the
wall of a 4-mile-long canyon. We have saved the best
for last. The famous Royal Gorge, site of the
world's highest suspension bridge is a few miles
west of Canon
City. It's a place where
the Arkansas River
has carved itself a very deep and narrow path
through granite. There's an excursion train (the
Royal Gorge Route) that
travels through the bottom of the gorge and a bunch
of recreational stuff at the top, including a city
park that features the famous suspension bridge. If
you have a problem with heights, walking on this
bridge is not for you.
Numerous outdoor recreational activities are available in the
surrounding area. There are several restaurants,
attractions, parks and shopping opportunities within
walking distance. All this and much more await
guests visiting the Canon City, Colorado area.
